The Kilkenny People newspaper is reporting that Kilkenny County Council carried out sampling to test for lead in drinking water at twenty city schools around the end of January. When the results were received, lead levels above the permitted safe drinking water limit were detected in some schools. As a result, seven schools in Kilkenny City have been notified that their drinking water contains excessive lead levels of the safe drinking water limit. Most lead found in drinking water comes from old lead pipes, lead fittings, lead-based solder or lead-lined tanks within a building or from the service pipe connecting the property to the mains supply at the mains stopcock.
