Microplastics – what effect do they have?

posted in: Perfect Water Blog | 0

Any plastic that has a diameter of less than 5mm is considered a Microplastic. It took a while for us to become aware of Microplastics, but with the rise in the use of plastic, their discovery was inevitable. In this post, we will talk a little about Microplastics and which water filter systems can remove them from your drinking water.

The topic received significant traction when researchers carried out a study where they found microplastics in bottled water. Tests of 250 bottles from 11 bottled water brands revealed microplastics in 93 per cent of the samples, with an average of 325 particles per 34 fluid ounces (1 litre) of water [1]

What is the impact of Microplastics on the environment?

When plastics or synthetic textiles are littered, they are broken down and make their way to the large bodies of water, such as lakes or oceans. Microplastics get to larger bodies of water via rivers, sewers, etc.

While larger plastics typically float on the ocean surface and can pile together, microplastics exist in deeper waters and land on beaches. A problem with microplastics is that fish can mistake them for food. The fish ingest these microplastics, which then pass along the food chain to us. Microplastics block up fish’s digestive systems, leading to lower oxygen levels, which then leads to lower levels of energy.

Can I do anything to prevent microplastic pollution?

While this is a global issue, each of us can do something about it. You can focus on reducing your plastic consumption and avoiding products that use microplastic beads. If you want to track your plastic consumption, there is an Irish-owned app that will help you do that: https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/munster/arid-40030181.html

Is there a water filter that takes out microplastics?

Yes, the good news is that you don’t have to ingest microplastics (from your water, at least). There two different water filters that will take out microplastics. While you can read about what each of our water filters do here, let’s focus on the water filters that remove microplastics.
