The drinking water supplies to 10pc of South Dublin homes (particularly in Dun Laoghaire and Rathdown) could be affected by lead contamination according to a report from RTE News. Lead in water pipes can seep into drinking water and lead contaminated water poses serious health risks particularly to babies, children, and pregnant women and can result in brain development problems as well as affect memory, behaviour, kidney function and blood pressure. The Health Service Executive is being consulted about a proposal to add a phosphate-type chemical to the water supply in some areas to help alleviate the problem.
