Fluoride Levels in US Drinking Water To Be Reduced

In Ireland, drinking water is treated with fluoride to help in fighting tooth decay. However, many people worry about the side effects of drinking water treated with fluoride. In the US, too much fluoride in water has become a common cause of white splotches on teeth in children. One study found about two out of five adolescents had tooth streaking or spottiness. Now, for the first time since the early sixties, the US government is lowering the recommended amount of fluoride added to drinking water. Since 1962, the US government has been advising water utilities and water treatment systems to add fluoride to a level of 0.7 parts per million in warmer climates, where people drink more water, to 1.2 parts per million in cooler areas.
