A research study by the University of Minnesota predicts that over the next 20 years, there will be a 45 percent spike in nitrate well contamination. Excess nitrate in well water, a majority of which comes from agricultural fertilizers, is potentially dangerous for infants, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
