THM’s are formed when chlorine is used to purify water from rivers and lakes to make it safe for drinking. Long-term exposure to the Trihalomethanes (THM’s) could increase the risks of getting bladder or colon cancer and could cause damage to the heart, lungs, liver, kidney and central nervous system. According to a report in the Irish Times, daily penalties could be imposed by the European Court of Justice if Ireland does not act to reduce or remove THM’s from drinking water. The unsafe levels of THM’s are usually found in drinking water supplies in parts of Cork, Galway, Donegal, Kerry, Kilkenny, Mayo, Meath, Roscommon, Waterford and Wicklow. Read More…
